dOES YOUR PIANO NEED REGULATION?

Pianist often struggle while attempting to play a difficult musical phrase due to the response of the pianos “action”. Sticky keys and sluggish action parts make controlling dynamics impossible. If it takes a lot of force to create a sound with one key and the key adjacent to it is loose and wobbly, then the piano is probably in need of a regulation.

Regulation refers to any adjustments made to the moving mechanisms or “action” inside of the piano. It is necessary to make these adjustments for the piano to perform as it was intended. Each of the 88 keys on a grand piano has its own 25 points of adjustment which need to work together in order to produce a sound. When a piano key is depressed, a series of chain reactions will occur in a sequence. Correcting the relationship between each of the moving parts in the action will restore the fluid touch and consistent feel of the piano’s response. After a proper regulation, each key of the piano will function smoothly and evenly throughout the keyboard.

The wooden action parts in a piano will get knocked out of regulation due to humidity changes as well as typical wear from use. Over time, the cloth and felt inside the piano will become compacted. This will cause action parts to drift out of alignment with normal use.  Regulation is the remedy.

Performing a proper regulation on a piano is similar to a receiving  a thorough engine tune-up on a vehicle. Much like the tuning and voicing on a piano, poor regulation often goes unnoticed because of the gradual process from the wear over time. From day to day it is difficult for anyone to detect a difference in the feel and sound of the instrument, but after years of playing these changes will become substantial. Much like the maintenance of an automobile, it is best to have a piano regularly serviced so that parts don’t deteriorate to the point of needing repair. After receiving quality service your piano will feel dynamic and sound amazing. The expressive clarity gained will help you to connect your musical thoughts to their desired sound.
